Turabian (AD) Citation Style Guide

If using the Turabian citation style is a challenge for you, this guide is the right place to cope with all citation-related issues.

Kate L.Turabian developed her manual for writing college papers and dissertations on the basis of the Chicago style manual.

That’s why Turabian and Chicago styles are almost twins, but there are some differences that you need to know.

Our editors have created an effective and easy guide with examples to follow while applying the Author-Date version of the Turabian citation style.

Let’s start and learn how to use Turabian AD correctly when referencing books, journal articles, and digital sources in your student papers.

General Information

  • Most rules used for citing sources according to Turabian AD are aligned with the Chicago AD style principles.
  • All sources mentioned in the text must be cited as references, including all the information about a source.
  • A list of the sources consulted and referenced should be titled “Reference List”.
  • Sources are cited in the text in parentheses: e.g., (Smith 2021).
  • When using direct quotes, add page numbers: e.g., (Smith 2021, 11).

  • Font – Times New Roman or Arial 12 pt.
  • Add two blank lines after the page title “Reference List”.
  • Reference entries are single-spaced.
  • Entries are separated by an additional line space.
  • Sources in the reference list are alphabetized by authors’ last names.
  • For successive entries by the same authors, a 3-em dash replaces the name(s) after the first appearance.

  • The title of the paper is in bold, placed in the middle part of the page.
  • The student’s name, course information, and date are provided below (in several lines).
